Sofnolime® is Molecular Products' brand name for soda lime. Soda lime is a Carbon Dioxide absorbent used for removal of CO2 mainly from breathable gases, in medical, military and safety applications.
In terms of Molecular Products critical filtration refers to the process of adsorbing various chemicals for air treatment and purification by use of a catalyst.
This technical article is a series of Frequently Asked Questions designed to explore how Sofnolime® is used in the medical arena.
Humans need oxygen to live. It makes up 21% of the volume of the atmosphere at sea level but high oxygen levels are well tolerated by humans with100% O2 tolerated by healthy people for at least 12 hours and 50% indefinitely. High levels are actually good for people that have been exposed to CO or smoke.
The performance of Sofnolime 797 is well documented at ambient pressure and has been used extensively under very diverse conditions and depths for many years, using both air and mixed gas systems. However there is little high quality data under documented, controlled but realistic diving conditions. Therefore the opportunity was created to run controlled testing under actual dive conditions using the ANSTI test facility at APD. This facility has the capability of simulating wet dive conditions at pressure (depth) in cold water, whilst controlling the breathing rate and measuring the circuit gas concentrations of CO2 and O2.
