Reclassification of the Risk Classification of Sofnolime®
3 March 2009

The revised materials safety data sheet (MSDS) is now available and will be used with all future deliveries of materials. Please remove old copies of the MSDS from your records and replace them with the revised version. The labels on the Sofnolime® products will change to reflect the reclassification but there will inevitably be a short period of time during which some products will have the old and some the new labelling as the label changes are implemented.
Reason for the change: The UK CHIP and EU rules that determine the risk classification for a preparation (a mixture of substances) are based on a set of empirical calculations. For some materials these rules lead to an incorrect classification that can be modified or verified by direct testing of the material properties. The relatively recent introduction of EU approved in-vitro tests for the classification of corrosive and irritant materials, that do not require the use of animals, has allowed Molecular Products to confirm the experience based observations that Sofnolime® was over classified as a corrosive by the empirical calculation. It is these independently commissioned test results that have lead to the correction and reclassification of all Sofnolime® products to risk phrase R36/38 : Irritant: Xi; Irritating to eyes and skin under UK CHIPS and the relevant EU supply regulations.
All customers supplied with Sofnolime® within the last 12 months will be notified of this change. Copies of Molecular Products Ltd material safety data sheets are supplied with your order or are available from our website or on request from your supplier or sales representative.
NB - Sofnolime® also includes the synonyms Medisorb / Prosorb / LSSAsorb / Agasorb / Absorptionskalk / Sefasorb / Carbolime /Aneslime / Sodalime / Chemosorb / Vita lime / Ventisorb
