Chemical oxygen generators

Chemical oxygen generators keep humans alive in enclosed environments

Our solid oxygen systems supply pure, safe, breathable air for operators working in some of the most remote places on the planet. Deployed in emergency situations in submarines, mines and safe havens all over the world, Molecular Products’ O2 candles are trusted life support systems when it matters most.

RELIABLE

First time, every time.

MPOGs, EO2-30s and CAN-33s activate first time, every time.

Failure is not an option in an emergency, when there’s no power to run a main air system or a window that opens to let in fresh air.

SAFE

Designed for environment of use.

Our oxygen generators are specifically designed and tested for their environments of use.

This includes shock, vibration and drop testing to meet the requirements of a submarine or mine.

SIMPLE

Less than 1 minute to start.

It takes less than 1 minute and a few simple steps for the oxygen flow to start.

We work with end users to develop our oxygen they’re simple to use, under pressure, in an emergency situation.

TRUSTED

In service all over the world.

Oor oxygen candles are in service with navies and mine operators all over the world.

Molecular Products’ is known for making chlorate candle technologies for life critical situations.

Chemical oxygen generators. The facts.

  • Chemical oxygen generators create O2 via a chemical reaction
  • The chemical reaction behind sodium chlorate chemistry is relatively simple; iron reacts with a small oxygen source to produce iron oxide (rust)
  • The heat from this reaction enables the sodium chlorate to decompose into oxygen and sodium chloride (table salt)
  • Sodium chlorate is extremely stable in storage
  • Solid oxygen is eight times more efficient than compressed air and twice as efficient as compressed oxygen
  • Sodium chlorate chemistry means chemical oxygen generators require no maintenance

How do chemical oxygen generators produce O2?

Oxygen is created from the careful manipulation of iron and sodium chlorate concentrations to control the rate of the reaction and the volumes produced. Once the reaction has been started, it will instantaneously produce oxygen. The reaction cannot be stopped once initiated, which means chemical oxygen generators are single use products.

How is an oxygen generator started?

A brass starter is screwed into the top of the oxygen generator. This creates friction between the starter and the chemical block to initiate the chemical reaction that produces O2.

Chemical oxygen Vs compressed oxygen.

Chemically generated O2 is eight times more efficient than compressed air and twice as efficient as compressed oxygen.

Compressed oxygen is:

  • complex to store and handle
  • requires regular maintenance and servicing, particularly valves
  • highly flammable, so presents significant explosion risk
  • pressurised, so explosion risk is high
  • supplied in large cylinders that take-up significant space
  • multiple use

Chemical oxygen generators have:

  • no stored pressure
  • no maintenance requirements
  • a long shelf-life
  • been shock and vibration tested for submarine and mine use
  • an efficiency advantage over pressurised and liquid oxygen systems
  • single use

Where are Molecular Products’ oxygen generators used?

submarine

Submarines.

MilSpec MPOGs, EO2-30s and CAN33s are in use today on submarine fleets all over the world. Our solid oxygen product range is supplied to navies operating submarine classes including Astute, Collins, Los Angeles, Scorpene, Type 209, Vanguard and Victoria.

Mines.

MineSpec MPOGs ensure emergency oxygen is available in safe havens and rescue chambers in mines worldwide. Designed specifically for use by operators who take refuge in chambers manufactured by our industry partner MineARC for the mining, petrochemical and tunnelling industries.

IBEEV.

Our chemical oxygen generators are used generate O2 in sealed environments onboard Ice Breaking Emergency Evacuation Vessels (IBBEV) to protect operators evacuated from toxic environments in offshore natural gas developments.

Safe havens.

In a hazardous environments, enclosed and sealed rooms provide a safe area for personnel to seek refuge. Emergency oxygen generators are activated to help maintain a breathable atmosphere.
